Want the latest on numerous activities and programs being offered by the South Milwaukee Recreation Department? Regular updates will be posted as they become available. Residents are encouraged to submit questions of interest via email that may be answered in our forum or by phone. 2009 PRIORITY REGISTRATION - SOUTH MILWAUKEE YOUTH FOOTBALL

The South Milwaukee Recreation Department is announcing that current 5th, 6th, and 7th graders interested in playing tackle football in the fall of 2009 may sign up at the priority registration rate of $165.00 no later than March 31, 2009.  After March 31, 2009, the registration fee is $215.00.   Registration forms may be obtained from the Recreation Department in Room 1001 in the Senior High.  Please park in the east lot and enter through door 24.

 

TERRY SCHMIDT MEMORIAL BASKETBALL TOURNEY

The date is set to start and end on Sunday, January 11, 2009.  This event, sponsored by the South Milwaukee Recreation Department, is a roster single elimination tournament open to all teams who are currently playing in the South Milwaukee Recreation Department Leagues.   Games will be played at the South Milwaukee Senior High Fieldhouse.

 

Terry Schmidt was a long time coach and official for the South Milwaukee Recreation Department.  Terry coached 7th and 8th grade boys basketball teams, and often chose his favorite team name of  “Wisconsin”.  Terry’s determination to teach and present a competitive team on the court will not be forgotten.  He was certified through the NYSCA as a lifetime member  and was also a co-founder and original member of the now well-established South Milwaukee Shoot-Out Basketball Tournament and Committee. For additional information, please call the South Milwaukee Recreation Department at 414-766-5081.

YOUTH DRAMA CLASSES

Boys and girls come join this popular activity!  A great opportunity for you to have fun while learning a little bit more about creativity.  This class (5 classes) involves activities that encourage and develop theatre skills, learning about improvisation, participating in movement activities and learning how to play a fictional character through creative drama exercises.  The class will conclude with a final presentation.  Students 7-10 years will meet from 6:00-7:20PM; and students 11-15 years will meet from 7:30-8:20PM.  Both classes will be held in the Middle School MPR on Thursday evenings Feb 5 - Mar 5, 2009.  You may registration now by mail or in person at the South Milwaukee Recreation Department.  You may also visit our website (www.smrec-fitness.org) to register online.

The program fee is $24 for residents and $36 for non-residents.

SMAC REGISTATION

What a great opportunity for kids 6 years and older who can swim 2 lengths of the pool to develop coordination, and enhance your swimming skills.  This competitive swim program is designed for both the beginning and experienced swimmer.  The objectives are to promote enjoyment while learning fundamental competitive swim skills, as well as providing continuing development for the experienced swimmer.  Please note that competition is optional and is not a requirement for membership.  This is especially good for adults who wish to swim laps and stay in shape throughout the year.  NEW members are always welcome.  Attendance is not mandatory at all practices - the coaches will develop a practice schedule that best suits your needs.  The fall session runs JANUARY 5 - MARCH 20, and will be held 6:30-8:00 on Monday & Friday and Wednesday from 6:00-7:30PM.

The class fee is $44 for Residents and $66 for non-residents and includes meets scheduled by the coach.  Parents must provide transportation to and from meets.

WINTER ADULT EXERCISE CLASSES

The South Milwaukee Recreation Department is happy to announce that the exercise classes will again be offered.  The classes will begin the week of January 26 and students will have eight lessons.  All classes will be held in room 1125 in the Senior High School, except Water Aerobic will be offered at the Middle School in the pool.  The classes offered will be:

 

Monday

Cardio Wt & Sculpt - 9:00-9:50AM               

Yoga - 6:00-6:50PM

Pilates - 7:00-7:50PM             

Tuesday 
Zumba - 6:00-6:50PM

Registration is now being accepted by mail (include name, address, age where applicable, telephone, class choice, e-mail address and proper fee) or in person on a first-come, first-served basis at the South Milwaukee Recreation Department, Room #1100, 901 15 Avenue, South Milwaukee, WI 53172.  Walk-in registration is possible, Monday - Friday, 8:00 -12:00 noon and 1:00-4:00 P.M.   We are located on the east side of the new Senior High School.  You may park your car in the east lot and enter the building through door #24.  The Recreation Office is located just inside of door #24 and the building is labeled COMMUNITY RECREATION & FITNESS CENTER.  You may also visit our website (www.smrec-fitness.org) and register on-line.

 

The fee for this class is $24 for residents and $36 for non-residents for 8 classes.   The Water Aerobics is $32 for residents and $48.00 for non-residents for 8 classes. The cardio Blast Kickboxing is $84 for residents and $126 for non residents for 28 classes.

MARTIAL ARTS FOR KIDS AND ADULTS

The following Martial Arts class will be a held from January 13 - April 23 at the Middle School in room 2720.  28 classes will be held in this session on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.  All students must purchase a uniform.  The uniform cost will be approximately $30.00.  Additional information will be available at the first class from Instructor - Rick Gawronski.  Enter door #34 and park in the eastside parking lot of the high school.  

 

Lil’ Dragons, a class for 4 and 5 year olds will be from 5:30PM-5:55PM.  This class will offer fun exercises and games, kids begin to learn the basic movements and manners associated with the martial arts.   The class fee is $30 residents and $45 non-residents.  A minimum of 10 students need to conduct the class.  

 

Lil’ Tigers Karate a class for 6 - 8 year olds will be from 6:00PM-6:25PM.  This class helps prepare children for our core martial art program.  Kids will learn the basic foundation of karate, develop confidence, strength, flexibility and coordination.  The class fee is $30 residents and $45 non-residents.  A minimum of 10 students need to conduct the class.

Te Jutsu Kai a class for 9 years - adults will be from 6:30PM-7:25PM.  Strongly influenced by Japanese karate, this class integrates principals and techniques of Chinese Kempo, Jeet Kune do, western boxing, and Eskrima.  By integrating we can cater to the needs and abilities of the individual without compromising the traditionalism in which the arts were developed, students become confident, physically fit, and well disciplined. The class fee is $40 residents and $60 non-residents.  A minimum of 10 students need to conduct the class.You may registration now by mail or in person at the South Milwaukee Recreation Department.  You may also visit our website (www.smrec-fitness.org) to register online.

COMPUTER CLASSES OFFERED

GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR HOME COMPUTER

This class explores some of the basics and more interesting but lesser known areas of home computing.  You will learn more about using your computer for tasks that you may not use it for now, including learning the terminology, resources on the internet, creating various documents, learning how to save and find files, and customizing settings on your computer.  This course is intended for anyone that is somewhat new to home computers or just wants to learn more about the basics.  

 

This class will be held on Monday evenings, Jan 5 – Feb 9, 2009, 6:00 – 7:30PM in the Senior High – Room 2105.    

 

LEARNING MICROSOFT EXCEL for the beginner 

This course is intended to introduce you to the program and help you find uses for it in your home, class, or business.   

 

This class will be held on Monday evenings, , Jan 5 – Feb 9, 2008, 7:30 – 9:00PM in the Senior High – Room 2105.    

INTERMEDIATE MICROSOFT OFFICE

This course will go into a higher level of using the Microsoft Office package, including Word, Excel and Power Point.  Creating more sophisticated and more technically useful documents is a goal of this course.  A good working knowledge of these programs or previous completion of the Recreation Department “Learning Microsoft Office” course would be very helpful to get the most out of this class. 

 

This class will be held on Monday evenings, Jan 7 – Feb 11, 2008, 6:00 – 7:30PM in the Senior High – Room 2105.    

LEARNING MICROSOFT OFFICE

This is a beginning course for leaning the various programs of the Microsoft Office package including Word, Excel, Access, and Power Point.  How to use these programs at home or work will be explored.  This class is intended for people who have a basic knowledge of their computer, or are also taking the “Getting the most out of your home computer” class in conjunction with this class.
