iPic is iSteep

The "iPic" movie theater, bowling alley, bar, and restaurant complex opened up last month at Bayshore.

I get the bar.  I get the restaurant.  With the old "Echo Bowl" being replaced by Walgreens in Glendale, I get the bowling alley.

I don't get the movie theater.  Or rather, I can't fathom the price.  $15 a pop, so $30 for a couple.

For $30, you get a movie, reserved seating, popcorn, and valet parking.

Absurd.  First, reserved seating is hardly a benefit.  It could be, if you intend on showing up at the last moment, but for most of us, we like picking out our own seat while in the theater.   One variable is who is in front of you, left, and right.  Don't know that if you're picking your seat before you get there.  With $15 seats, I imagine many empty seats and room to spread out.

Valet parking?  The drop-off is INSIDE the parking structure.  What's that going to save you, 30 steps?  Those are some expensive steps, plus you'll probably end up tipping the valet.

Ok, you get popcorn.  That better be some delicious, delicious popcorn, served in sterling silver bowls with a personal usher, ready to spritz each handful with butter.

There's a better option 3 blocks away.  It's called the Fox-Bay Cinema Grill.  Two tickets and a large popcorn will run you $21 .. 40% cheaper.  Ample parking in back.  Plus, you can have drinks and food while watching the movie.

One can imagine the iPic's prices are so high to prevent the theater from becoming like Mayfair's theater, with its real (and perceived) youth crime problems.  Here's my bet.  A year from now, with a huge of every iPic movie showing going empty, they quietly lower prices to a reasonable rate, and hope for the best.

first of all - when they "proposed" this movie theater it wasn't suppose to have first run movies. But then again, they have said a lot of things that changed after they were constructed.

secondly - we just received a Bayshore gift card as a "thank you" to our family and in the thank you note, they wrote to go see a movie.  I was so excited because I would NEVER spend this much on a movie for the reasons you have mentioned above.  Anyhow, I ran over there to get the tickets and it was $31.00's for two adults, one child for a matinee and they don't accept the BAYSHORE gift card.

I was going to buy tickets to Sunday's movie at 5:10 and was a bit apprehensive because "what if somethiing comes up"? then we are stuck with the tickets.... and since I only had the gift card with me and we were going to work out, I couldn't buy the tickets.  I'm glad it worked out that way.  As far as the seating, there are three of us.  So that means that two would sit together and one would sit by themselves or with a stranger... that didn't appeal to me.

I'm not a "mall shopper" nor a "chain eater", so I didn't want to spend $50 on just food.  Fortunately, my mom is a "Bayshore Groupie" and we are going to trade the gift card for cash and we will probably end up seeing the movie and dinner at the Fox Bay - atleast our dollars will be spent local.

Good blog.

P.S.  I was talking to a friend who worked at a movie theater growing up.  She said 75% of the ticket cost goes to pay for the actual movie if it is 1st run and 50% if it is 2nd run.  When they chage all this extra for the popcorn/soda/parking they are keeping the movie people from getting that portion of the money.
